The Story of IPR University Center

Finland is a small country, but our greatest competitive advantages have never been only factories, machines, or natural resources. They have been ideas, inventions, and an engineering-minded people who, after the wars, helped raise Finland to the forefront of global technological development.
In the late 1990s, a group of Finnish universities and companies recognized that the society of the future would increasingly be built on intangible capital — innovation, creativity, research, brands, and technology. A new institution was needed to bring together academic research, education, and practical expertise. The IPR University Center was established through a joint initiative of its founding universities — University of Helsinki, University of Turku, the Helsinki School of Economics, and Hanken School of Economics — together with representatives of the business community, with the aim of coordinating and developing undergraduate and postgraduate education in intellectual property law as well as research in the field.
And it was to meet this need that the IPR University Center was founded in 1999.
Over the years, the IPR University Center has grown into a meeting place that is unique even on a global scale for researchers, students, businesses, lawyers, inventors, creative professionals, and decision-makers. In an exceptional way, it combines academic expertise with the practical know-how of industry professionals and provides impartial knowledge on intellectual property rights. But the institute has not merely taught intellectual property law — it has also played a role in building the foundation of Finland’s innovation society.
Now the world is changing once again. Artificial intelligence, data, and the digital economy are challenging old structures and creating new opportunities for business. The mission of the IPR University Center is to help Finland and the Finnish people understand, protect, and make the best possible use of the intangible assets of the future.
