An open online course on intellectual property rights and business. This highly popular, practice-oriented course is 2 ECTS credits. If you wish, you may register the credits through Hanken Open University. An updated Finnish version, IPR is the New Black 2.0, was published in October 2025. The course is also available in English. Dataliiketoiminnan oikeutta (in Finnish)

Data has become one of the most important resources in business, public administration, and everyday life. After completing this course, you will understand the key features of data regulation and related intellectual property rights, the significance of competition law and technical standards in data-driven business, and the opportunities provided by the EU Data Act, Data Governance Act, and open data regulations.

The course is available to everyone as a 1 ECTS course and in extended, customised versions for member institutions. You will receive a certificate upon completion.

Aineettomat oikeudet yritystoiminnassa (in Finnish)

This online course examines intellectual property rights from a business perspective, particularly for SMEs and startups. The course is divided into thematic sections covering brands, design and creative work, inventions and other technical solutions, software, and IPR agreements. These topics are addressed in a practical manner, focusing on key regulations and business considerations.

The course takes approximately 5 hours to complete, and you will receive a certificate upon completion.

Tekijänoikeutta yrityksille ja yritysneuvojille (in Finnish)

Designed for business advisors and professionals who need copyright knowledge in their work, this course is an excellent tool for understanding copyright in business contexts. In addition to copyright, the course also introduces industrial property rights.

Completion takes approximately 8 hours, and you will receive a certificate. More information about the course.

Tulevaisuuden keksijät ja IPR (in Finnish)

This course introduces intellectual property rights and their use in the commercialisation of inventions and business activities. The aim is to provide perspectives on protecting your own work and managing your rights.

Guide to IPR / Immaterialrättens grunder

A basic course in intellectual property rights, offered as part of the University of Lapland and Hanken curriculum. The course is available in English and Swedish.

The course is 5 ECTS credits and no prior IPR studies are required.

 

Advanced IP Courses

The advanced intellectual property program consists of three courses: Advanced Patent Law, Advanced Trademark Law, and Advanced Copyright Law.

Each course’s workload is 5 ECTS credits (15 ECTS in total). The program is jointly provided by the University of Helsinki, the University of Lapland, and the University of Eastern Finland. It is open to students of member universities.

Participants must have previously completed a basic course in intellectual property rights. More information about the courses.

Trade Secret Law

This course provides a detailed examination of EU and US trade secret law, including its history and underlying justifications, highlighting the importance of information governance practices.

It begins with an overview of information governance principles in the digital economy, followed by an examination of the key provisions of the EU Trade Secret Directive. It then compares these provisions with corresponding US law and concludes by emphasising information governance practices.

The course is worth 5 ECTS credits.

Designed especially for business students, this 6 ECTS course introduces intellectual property rights and their significance. After completion, students will understand the key concepts and areas of the intellectual property system, be able to apply protection requirements and assess infringements in practical situations, and understand the importance of intellectual property rights in business.

A brand-related seminar included in the course in November is available free of charge to everyone.

Intellectual Property Rights and Research

After completing this 3 ECTS course, students will have a basic understanding of intellectual property and its impact on research and teaching. Whether developing an invention or focusing on research and teaching, intellectual property rights determine your rights and responsibilities. You will learn how to use the copyright system and understand its boundaries—particularly in teaching and using online materials and databases. The course also provides an overview of industrial property rights, including patents, utility models, and data protection, which are essential for researchers. Additionally, it covers legislation concerning employee and university inventions.

Intellectual Property: Skills and Research Orientations for Doctoral Students

Developed collaboratively between universities, this course serves as a resource and material bank for member universities.

Designed especially for design students, this course provides perspectives on protecting creative work and managing your rights, while also emphasizing the careful use of others’ rights.

You may complete the course at your own pace and in sections of your choice. It is recommended to also complete IPR is the New BLACK. The course is also offered at higher education institutions in Finland that provide design education. More information about the course.

IPR University Center webinars and recordings

Member universities can award credits to students for participating in IPR University Center events and completing related assignments. The IPR University Center evaluates the assignments.

Speakers are experts in their respective fields, including practicing attorneys and corporate legal counsel. Students gain experience in following expert presentations relevant to practice, deepen their knowledge of intellectual property law issues, and gain insight into the types of matters handled by legal professionals in practice.

IPR-perusteet – Humanistinen ammattikorkeakoulu (in Finnish)

For students completing the Master’s degree in Community Education at HUMAK University of Applied Sciences, an online course in IPR basics is compulsory. The course focuses on copyright and is worth 1 ECTS credit.
