In February 2024, the EU adopted the regulation for the European Digital Identity Framework (EDIF). The EDIF, among other things, stipulates the design of a mobile application called the European Digital Identity Wallet (EDIW) that enables individuals to access, share, manage, and delete their data. The EDIW promises to empower individuals regarding their data and to ensure equal access to public and private digital services—potentially even facilitating digital transactions, including access to and use of the digital euro.

The webinar presents the main features of the EDIW and its relation to other EU data-related laws, ranging from the proposal to establish a digital euro to the Digital Markets Act and Artificial Intelligence Act. The discussion examines the EDIW as a link to European (personal) data spaces and critically examines the user-control paradigm that the wallet amplifies, reflecting on, in particular, whether privacy and data protection rights are strengthened or weakened through the use of the wallet. The webinar also considers the impact of the new AI-related privacy harms on digital identity wallets.

At the end of the webinar, there will be time allocated for questions and discussion.

The webinar will be recorded.
