Part 2 – Industry Approach to Open Source

How do large organisations work with open source over the long term? Mary Wang of the OpenChain Project and Jimmy Ahlberg of Ericsson on standards, governance and the patent questions that come with contributing.
For large organisations, open source is a long-term commitment: they depend on it, contribute to it and are accountable for it across their supply chains. This webinar looks at how industry handles that responsibility in practice.
Mary Wang, Executive Director of the OpenChain Project, presents OpenChain and its international standards for open source license compliance and security assurance, ISO/IEC 5230 and ISO/IEC 18974. She explains what benefits they bring to large organisations that work with open source strategically, and how a shared standard creates trust between companies and their suppliers.
Jimmy Ahlberg, Expert and Senior Legal Counsel at Ericsson and chair of the OpenChain governing board, then shows how a large organisation manages open source in practice, focusing on patent questions that arise when a company contributes to open source projects. When does a contribution affect your patent position, and how do you set up processes that let engineers contribute without exposing the company?
The session is hosted by Martin von Willebrand and Mikko Murto, with time for discussion and questions.
You will learn
- What the OpenChain standards are and why large organisations adopt them
- How a global company organises its open source management
- How patents and open source contributions interact, and how to manage the risks
Speakers of the second webinar are:
Martin von Willebrand. Double Open/HH Partners
Mary Wang, Linux Foundation
Mikko Murto, HH Partners
Jimmy Ahlberg, Ericsson

OPEN SOURCE – WEBINAR SERIES
Open source is no longer only a licensing question. It shapes how organisations build software, how fast they can adopt AI, and how well they cope with new regulation and a changing geopolitical situation. In this three-part series, practitioners from industry and law look at open source as a strategic asset: how to assess where your organisation stands, how leading companies run open source at scale, and how to turn a growing set of requirements into practical, workable routines.
The webinars build on each other, but each one stands on its own. Join one or take part in the whole series.
