Part 1 – Open Source Is Strategic

How mature is your organisation’s use of open source, and what does that mean for your software development and AI capabilities? A conversation with Jonne Soininen, Nokia’s Head of Open Source and Technology Vision, built around a five-stage maturity model.
Almost every organisation uses open source, but few use it strategically. The difference shows in how fast teams can build, how well they manage risk, and how ready they are to adopt AI.
In the first webinar of the series, Martin von Willebrand and Mikko Murto are joined by Jonne Soininen from Nokia. The session combines a short presentation with an open, podcast-style discussion.
We walk through a well-established open source maturity model with five stages, based on the maturity and strategy model developed at Sony Mobile. We explain each stage and discuss what moving from one stage to the next means in practice for an organisation’s capabilities. We then look at the forces now reshaping the picture: AI, which builds on open source and multiplies its use; regulation such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act; and geopolitics, which has made questions of control and dependency strategic.
You will learn
- How to recognise your organisation’s stage of open source maturity
- How maturity affects software development capability and AI adoption
- How AI, regulation and geopolitics change the strategic case for open source
Speakers of the first webinar are:
Martin von Willebrand, Double Open
Mikko Murto, HH Partners
Jonne Soininen, Nokia

OPEN SOURCE – WEBINAR SERIES INTRODUCTION
Open source is no longer only a licensing question. It shapes how organisations build software, how fast they can adopt AI, and how well they cope with new regulation and a changing geopolitical situation. In this three-part series, practitioners from industry and law look at open source as a strategic asset: how to assess where your organisation stands, how leading companies run open source at scale, and how to turn a growing set of requirements into practical, workable routines.
The webinars build on each other, but each one stands on its own. Join one or take part in the whole series.
